Home plumbing is everything from the meters inward: the water supply lines, the gas pipework, the drains and every tap, fixture and appliance they serve. Petrie's housing stock gives that plumbing three distinct vintages, and the 1970s-to-1990s growth belt shapes most of the work we see.
At the last census, 86.4 per cent of dwellings were separate houses, and most of those went up through the suburb's big subdivision decades. Population growth across the surrounding area ran at 4.1 per cent over the five years to 2025, and building approvals added 72 dwellings in that stretch, so upgrades and renos sit alongside the ageing-stock repairs.
The oldest layer sits around the village streets near the station, where weatherboard cottages predate the 1961 town water scheme. Any original supply pipe still under those floors was more often galvanised steel than copper, and it tends to announce itself through brown water and fading pressure rather than a sudden failure.
Ground conditions matter as much as pipe materials. The old village streets run down a hillside of phyllite and slate to the river, so the lowest lots on each street carry the end of every gravity run.
Two ageing systems get pages of their own. The hot water plumbing page deals with the storage units now reaching replacement age across that growth belt, and blocked drains in Petrie deals with the earthenware house drains still serving the village grid.

Mending a burst pipe or renewing a leaking fitting is minor work; installing a new fixture or shifting an existing one is notifiable work that finishes with a Form 4. The difference decides who does the job, what paperwork exists afterwards, and what you should ask for.
Minor work still requires a licensed plumber, but no permit applies and nothing is lodged with the QBCC. A leaking tap or a running toilet is a typical minor job, and our tap repairs and toilet repairs pages set out what each one involves.
Notifiable work covers jobs like a new vanity, a relocated shower or a second toilet. No council permit applies, but your plumber files a Form 4 with the QBCC within 10 business days of finishing and passes a copy to the owner.
Above that sits permit work, such as the drainage for a new build, which needs council approval that the plumber secures before starting. A bathroom renovation stacks several notifiable jobs into one project, which is why the paperwork side matters there most.
A small list of jobs is unregulated, meaning anyone with the right skills may do them:
Unregulated work still has to meet the minimum standard. Swapping out a complete tap, or a full toilet, remains licensed work.
The QBCC's online registers let you confirm a licence and see whether a Form 4 was registered for your address. Where work proves defective, or the Form 4 never shows up, the QBCC takes complaints through an online form that covers plumbing and drainage matters.

A burst pipe, the smell of gas, water rising through the house, or a total loss of supply needs a plumber now, not next week. Queensland tenancy law lists the faults that count as emergency repairs. A burst water service, a gas leak, serious flood damage, a blocked or broken toilet and a failed water or gas supply all make the list.
Plenty of jobs suit a scheduled appointment instead: dripping taps, slow drains, or a quote for planned work. Storm season adds a local wrinkle, because summer storms drain off the hills to the river and can force water back up the lowest gully traps on the hillside streets.
For the first steps in a genuine emergency, our emergency plumber page walks through what to shut off and when to call.

What drives a plumbing quote is the fault, the parts it needs, how tight the access is, and the time spent on site. A written quote needs to name the scope of work, every part and the labour, so you can compare quotes line by line.
Access is the factor owners forget. A vanity in a tight ensuite or a pipe run under a weatherboard floor takes longer to reach than the same job in open space, and time on site is part of the price.
Ask for the quote in writing and keep it with the job's paperwork. If a line is unclear, question it before work begins, not after the invoice arrives.

Alongside Petrie itself, we work the neighbouring suburbs each week. The suburbs we cover page lists them all, including a plumber in Whiteside and a plumber in Kurwongbah, with Lawnton, Joyner and Kallangur close by.
No. There's no extra charge for nights, weekends or public holidays, and we're available 24/7, 7 days a week.
Check the licence first. Look the plumber up on the QBCC's licence register, and check whether a Form 4 was lodged for your address after notifiable work. Ask for the job's scope, parts and labour in writing, and keep your Form 4 copy.
Compare like with like. Get two quotes on the same scope and check both break down parts and labour line by line. Ask for any line you don't recognise to be explained before you sign.
Only a short unregulated list. You may renew a tap washer or jumper valve, fit a shower head or change a domestic water filter cartridge. Toilet cistern washers and the suction cup rubber are also unregulated, provided the minimum standard is met. Swapping an entire tap or toilet is licensed work.
Plenty. Petrie's housing spans pre-1940 cottages through to 1980s-2000s builds, and the oldest cottages around the village predate the 1961 town water scheme, so surviving supply pipe was often galvanised steel. Lead-based solder was also common on copper pipes and brass fittings until 1989, worth knowing before pipe work.
Only a licensed gasfitter. In Queensland, gas work means installing, repairing, servicing, testing or certifying a gas system and its pipework, and only a licence holder may do it. Ask to see that licence before any gas job starts.
