A blocked drain rarely arrives without notice. Learn the four signs below and you can catch it before wastewater finds its way inside.

Signs You Have a Blocked Drain
Slow drainage, gurgling sounds, a sewage smell and water rising where it shouldn't are the four signs, and they usually appear in that order. Each one tells you the blockage is getting worse, not better.
Slow drainage
Water taking longer than it should to empty, usually starting at the kitchen sink because grease and food scraps collect there first.
Gurgling
Noise from a fixture nobody is using means air is trapped behind a partial blockage in the shared line.
Sewer smell
A whiff near a floor waste or outside drain means waste is sitting where it should be flowing.
Water backing up
Waste returning into the shower or the lowest fixture means the line is fully blocked and needs a plumber now, not next week.
One more sign sits outside: the overflow relief gully. That low drain fitting near the wall is built to spill first when the sewer blocks, so wastewater floods the yard instead of the house. If yours is overflowing, the blockage is real and active, and our emergency plumber page sets out what to do straight away.

How to Tell Sewer From Stormwater
The dividing line is the sewer connection: the private drain running from your fixtures to that point is yours to maintain, and the main beyond it belongs to Unitywater. Knowing which side you're on saves a call to the wrong people.
The two systems do separate jobs, and the law keeps them apart:
- The sewer carries waste from the toilet, the shower, the basin and the kitchen sink; the stormwater side carries rain off the roof and yard.
- A roof water pipe belongs on the stormwater side, never the sewer.
When one drain serves two or more premises, the owners share responsibility for it.
Queensland's plumbing law also puts a duty on owners: do what's reasonable to keep the drainage serving your property in sound working order. Catching a slow drain early is part of that duty.

Why Unblocking a Drain Is Licensed Work
Queensland law classes the clearing of sanitary plumbing and drainage as minor work, which means a licensee must carry it out. Minor work still needs the right licence, even though neither a permit nor a Form 4 applies.
The Form 4 is the notice a licensed plumber lodges with the QBCC after finishing notifiable work, such as a renovation. Drain clearing sits below that threshold, so there's no paperwork for you to chase.
Drainage work below ground level falls under a drainer licence, so anything buried in your yard belongs to a tradesperson holding that class. A poorly cleared drain can leak waste into the ground for years, and the licence class exists to prevent that.

Clearing the Outside Gully Grate
Two jobs around a blocked drain are unregulated, so you may legally do them yourself: cleaning the grate that sits at ground level over the drain trap, and renewing the caps on the inspection openings. Everything past those two needs a licence.
Safe steps while we're on the way:
- Lift and clean the grate over the gully trap so nothing stops the overflow path.
- Screw on replacement caps where the ground-level inspection openings have lost theirs.
- Keep the overflow relief gully clear of leaves and garden debris year-round.
- Stop running water into the blocked line, since every flush adds to what has to come back up.
We leave the clearing itself to the licensed visit, along with anything that needs tools or access below ground.

What Petrie's Ground Does to Drains
Drain calls here follow the suburb's own pattern. The house drains under the village grid around Connors Street went in before PVC replaced earthenware, so shifted joints and cracked runs still cause repeat blockages. Roots find those open joints long before a run collapses outright.
Storm season adds the second pattern. Summer rain runs off the hillside toward the river, and the lowest lots on each street cop backflow through their gully traps and pits first. An overflow straight after a storm deserves a proper look, not a shrug.
A blocked toilet on an old earthenware line is a different job from a toilet repairs call on a modern PVC run. A grease-narrowed kitchen waste often traces back to a kitchen sink installed decades ago. We quote for the drain you actually have.

Questions Owners Ask About Blocked Drains
Call (07) 3523 6484Where does my drain stop being my problem?
Your private drain ends at the sewer connection, and everything beyond it is Unitywater's. Looking after the private side is the owner's job under Queensland law.
Is my blockage a sewer or a stormwater problem?
Sewer lines serve the fixtures that flush and drain: the toilet, shower, basin and kitchen sink. Stormwater lines carry rain from the roof and yard, and a roof water pipe should discharge to stormwater, never to the sewer. Work out which system the blocked pipe serves before you call anyone.
Who pays when a drain is shared with a neighbour?
The owners share it. When a combined drain serves two or more homes and agreement fails, the local government may do the work and bill each owner a fair share.
What changes the cost of clearing a drain in Petrie?
The price hinges on where the blockage sits and what caused it: a simple obstruction or damaged pipe. The written quote settles the figure for your job.
Does home insurance pay for a blocked drain?
No, there is no single answer: cover depends on the policy and the cause. Work done by an appropriately licensed person meets the relevant standards and keeps a later claim out of trouble if the drainage fails.
