Many local showers are working past their prime. The weatherboard cottages near Station Street often still run their original wall mixers, and the 1960s-to-1980s subdivisions carry bathrooms of the same vintage. Area-level growth ran at 4.1 per cent over the five years to 2025, with 72 dwellings approved in that stretch, so the older bathrooms carry the daily load.

Shower Faults That Need a Plumber

A shower calls for a plumber when it drips with the taps shut off, runs cold or lukewarm, or loses flow.

Each fault points at a different part. A drip that keeps going once the taps are closed comes from the mixer, where worn washers or an ageing cartridge no longer seal. Lukewarm water often means the cartridge is blending too much cold into the mix.

Weak or patchy flow usually traces to scale clogging the spray holes, a flow restrictor built into the head, or that same tired cartridge. If no hot tap in the house behaves, the fault lies with the water heater, and our hot water plumbing page deals with that.

One clue narrows things further. Seepage at the join between head and arm that appears only during use points to a loose connection or a tired seal there, which is a quick fix.

Can You Fix a Shower Yourself in Queensland

Yes, but only for the head: Queensland lets anyone swap a shower head, while everything behind it needs a licensed plumber.

The QBCC treats a head swap as unregulated work, though the result still has to comply with the standards. Everything beyond the head is regulated.

Mending, renewing or removing a fitting or fixture counts as minor work: a licensed plumber does it, and neither a council permit nor a Form 4 applies. That category covers the arm, the wall mixer and the cartridge within it.

Putting in a new outlet, or moving the shower somewhere else, lifts the job into the notifiable category for an existing building. A licensed plumber carries it out, and a Form 4 reaches the QBCC within 10 business days of completion. The plumber lodges the paperwork and pays its fee, and can pass that cost, plus administration, on to you.

From the Shower Head Back to the Wall

From the outlet inward, a shower is made of the head, the arm or rail, the hose feeding a handheld unit, and the mixer.

  1. The head

pushes water through its spray holes. Scale and restrictors collect here, and this is the one part anyone may renew.

  2. The arm or rail

an arm delivers water from the wall to a fixed head, and a rail mounts a handheld unit at a height you set. Both sit exposed, so no wall opening is needed.

  3. The hose

connects the handheld unit to the wall outlet. Kinks and worn ends leak at the connections.

  4. The mixer and its cartridge

the cartridge controls how much water flows and how hot it runs, so wear appears as dripping, a stiff handle or temperatures that drift. Where the mixer sits inside the wall, reaching it means opening the wall.

Where a bath spout shares the wall, a diverter routes water between spout and head. Spout flow during a shower, or head flow during a bath, tells you the diverter has worn out. Our bathroom plumbing page covers the whole room, and bathroom renovation plumbing maps the bigger jobs.

When a Shower Repair Becomes a Replacement

Repair wins while the fault sits in a washer or cartridge; replacement wins once wear goes past a swap, or the shower is being added or moved.

Efficiency can tip the call too. Every tap, shower and flow controller needs WaterMark certification plus registration under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme, and a licensed plumber may only lawfully install a product bearing WaterMark. New homes require showerheads of at least 3 stars, a rule that skips renovations.

Rentals add their own trigger. Queensland tenancy rules cap a rental showerhead at 9 litres per minute or less before a landlord can bill a tenant for all water use. For fixtures made from 2005 on, the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) advises looking for 3 stars or higher.

A head with the right rating clears that bar in one visit, and our vanity and basin installation page covers the room's other fittings.

Shower Questions From Petrie Homes

Call (07) 3523 6484

Can a plumber fix my shower in Petrie?

Yes, for every fitting: head, arm, rail, hose, mixer and cartridge. Water getting out of the shower recess into walls or floors is a different job, so mention which of the two you are seeing when you ring.

Why does my shower head drip when the water is off?

The mixer is the likely culprit. A worn washer or an aged cartridge inside it stops sealing, and water creeps through to the head. A little drain-out just after use is normal.

Can I change my own shower head in Queensland?

Yes, the QBCC lists a head swap as unregulated work, so anyone may do it. The result still needs to comply with the standards, and the arm, the wall mixer and its cartridge stay with a licensed plumber.

Do I need a plumber to install a new shower?

Yes, a new or moved outlet is notifiable work for a licensed plumber. The plumber lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC inside 10 business days of finishing and pays its fee.

Who fixes a shower mixer in a Petrie unit?

The lot owner does. Pipes serving one lot only and inside its boundary belong to that owner, and a shower tray falls to the lot owner or occupier even outside the lot.
